We hope you are staying healthy and staying home if possible to do your part in reducing the spread of COVID-19. Hopefully as things improve, we can get back to normal and enjoy softball again! The Board of Directors and coaches from last year have been receiving questions on a variety of topics relating to the upcoming season. We want to answer as many of them as possible so that there is no confusion. Just remember, while we want to get on the fields and play softball again as soon as possible, we will not do that until it is safe for everyone involved. The safety of our participants and community is our top priority. Continue reading for more information on the upcoming season, at-home training options, and more! All Softball Facilities ClosedDue to the COVID-19 outbreak, upcoming events have been cancelled for the health and safety of our participants and community. You can always view the most updated schedule here. As a result of the Wisconsin Safer at Home Order, all Portage High School softball facilities are closed indefinitely. This includes all fields, batting cages, practice areas, concession stand, restrooms, etc. These facilities will be opened back up once it is safe to do so. Please obey this facility closure. Status of 2020 Summer LeaguesWith the exception of our Rookie League, all other leagues participate within parent summer leagues containing teams from around the area. Those leagues along with our organization are in a holding pattern currently. No decisions have been made yet in regards to having a summer season or canceling it. We are in contact with those leagues and will continue to provide updates as decisions are made. Currently, all of our leagues are on hold. Coaches & Team AssignmentsOur Board of Directors has not yet met to decide how many teams each league will have and assign coaches to those teams. The Board of Directors is waiting to see if the Wisconsin Safer at Home order is extended or not and will continue to follow the advice of local health officials. Once the Board is allowed to meet and there is a positive outlook for the summer season, coaches will be assigned to teams. Coaches would then be able to split up the registered players on to their teams. The creation of teams and assignment of coaches also depends upon the parent leagues our teams participate in. TournamentsWe have not registered any teams for tournaments yet for the upcoming season. We will not be registering for tournaments until we know the status of our summer leagues and we know if we have enough players to form tournament teams. Our 2020 Summer Tournament that we host at the end of July is currently accepting registrations. At this time, we are assuming that we will be able to host the tournament but will make adjustments if necessary depending on the status (open vs. closed) of the Portage Community School District facilities. At-Home Training & Facebook ChallengesLater this month, we will start sending out skills & drills that our players can do at home. These will be sent out via email, TeamApp, our website, and our Facebook page. In the meantime, you can view our instructional videos in our Coach Center. We will also post some challenges on Facebook for you to complete and share with us on Facebook. We understand that things are not normal in the world right now and that you may have concerns or questions. Please follow the advice of local health officials to help get things back to normal as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us or comment on this post. We will do our best to answer your questions even though we do not know all the answers at this time. Thanks, Portage Youth Softball Board of Directors |
